BRIEF HISTORY OF TV

• 1953 -- FCC approves RCA/NTSC color TV standard, replacing CBS's earlier version.
• 1956 -- Ampex introduces first broadcast-quality videotape system. WNBQ Chicago is first TV station to broadcast all local programming in color. First practical remote control invented, called the Zenith Space Commander.
• 1960 -- Nixon-Kennedy debates make TV, and looking good for the camera, a vital political tool.
• 1962 -- AT&T's first Telstar satellite makes international broadcasting possible.
• 1963 -- Roper polls say more people now get their news from TV than from newspapers. Instant replay first used in televised football game.
• 1969 -- 600 million people watch first TV transmission from the moon. PBS founded, taking over from earlier non-commercial educational network.
• 1973 -- First "giant screen" projection TVs come to market.
•1976 -- Sony introduces the ill-fated Betamax home video cassette recorder.
• 1980 -- CNN launched, first all-news cable channel. MTV follows later that year.
• 1983 -- Indianapolis, Indiana becomes the first city to receive Direct Broadcast Satellite TV service.
• 1984 -- Congress deregulates the cable industry, launching a massive consolidation trend.
• 1996 -- FCC approves the ATSC HDTV standard. DVD format and players introduced.
• 1997 -- TiVo founded.
• 2004 -- DVDs outsell VHS tapes for first time.
• 2005 -- YouTube founded. Apple Computer introduces digital sales of TV shows through its iTunes store. Video iPod released.
• 2006 -- YouTube bought by Google.
• 2007 -- NBC and News Corp. join to create YouTube rival (hulu). Apple TV released.
• 2008 -- MyTeeV.com founded
